Shaping Seconds with Radium Instruments

Radium Instruments is a Norwegian watch brand with a strong identity, dedicated to crafting high-quality timepieces for a defined international market. The company aims to sell 10,000 watches globally by 2030. Eker Design has played a key role in helping Radium meet critical criteria to achieve this goal. The watch company was founded by author and film director Thomas Cappelen Malling, who later brought Sjur Stangebye-Hansen on board. Today, the watches are assembled by watchmaker Simen Solvold at Ur-tjenesten in Tveita.

To evolve Radium’s iconic design in an innovative way, it was essential to understand the brand’s DNA and user preferences. A key requirement for the new watch was water resistance down to 200 meters, enhancing the perception of quality and durability. Additionally, a thorough analysis was conducted to explore how new materials could be seamlessly integrated into the design.

Several design concepts were considered to meet the defined requirements. The final choice was a design where the bezel seamlessly integrates with a crown guard while refining the original case shape and incorporating a “bubble back” case back. The crown’s design played a crucial role in the new aesthetics—both functionally and visually—becoming a standout design element. This resulted in a sportier, more modern, and distinctive look while preserving Radium’s unique design DNA.

The project was a close collaboration between Radium and Eker Design, with Eker Design leading the process from the initial sketches to prototype-ready files. The development included in-depth research, design refinement, testing, iteration, and Design for Manufacturing (DFM), as well as the creation of inventory systems and quality control procedures. Through knowledge sharing and workshops, the team executed a targeted and creative development process, culminating in a final product now ready for the international market.

The new watches from the Norwegian brand have passed tough NATO tests. In one test (MIL-STD-810H, Method 524.1), the watch was frozen at -46°C for 24 hours, placed in ice, and then heated to 45°C – with no problems. Very few watches in the world have been tested this way.

“Eker Design’s ability to immerse themselves in Radium’s story and create a bold new design that stays true to our DNA is something we are extremely pleased with. We are very satisfied with the value we got for our investment.”
