In a world of silence, how can you know if something important is happening
Introduction
Imagine a world without sound. The doorbell is ringing, your child is crying, your dog is barking, the fire alarm is activated, or a neighbour is calling for you. Important events that immediately calls for your attention and that need your immediate response. But in a world of silence, how can you know if something important is happening?
In cooperation with our customer Sensio we have designed an innovative communication unit designed specifically for individuals with hearing impairments and elderly users. This device ensures they never miss out on important events happening around them and can experience safety and peace of mind in their home.
Insights & Research
Design from inside out
In the insight phase we performed market research and visited / interviewed users. Together with Sensio we used this foundation and their knowledge to define following set of key focus areas for the product:
- Attention Capture Alert System: When an alert is triggered, the device should spring to life. Capturing attention with vivid visual cues and clear auditory signals to ensure that users are immediately informed about various events, even in different rooms or lighting conditions.
- Seamless Connectivity: Seamless integration into the Sensio ecosystem of sensors, FlexiBlink.
- Design: The design should be both functional and stylish, avoiding the stigma often associated with disability aids. The device should blend effortlessly into any home environment and becoming a natural part of the décor when not in use.
With a clearly defined goal and set of requirements we were able to work efficient and precise in the design phase. This started with designing the internal required components and moving our way out to the outside.
Concept, Design & Engineering
Overcoming Technical Challenges
Throughout the development process, we faced and overcame several technical challenges:
- Superior Sound Quality: Achieving clear, high-quality sound output was paramount, and we succeeded in eliminating unwanted vibrations from the speaker.
- Versatile Visual Alerts: The visual alarm needed to be effective in various lighting conditions and locations within the home. To meet this requirement we used a strong LED that radiate light through a custom designed lens.
A Design That Fits Every Home
The result is a beautifully crafted communication unit with a sleek, spherical design. The main visual alert, positioned discreetly in the back, projects a vertical light stripe that pulses in harmony with the screen. All accompanied by a clear and compelling sound.
The soft shape, modern dark color, and innovative circular screen distinguish this unit from typical disability aids. It’s a product that users will be proud to display in their homes—blending seamlessly with modern décor while standing out when activated.
